9 out of 10 Romanians consider domestic violence to be an overwhelming phenomenon in Romania. However, there is little usable data on the actual number of domestic violence victims, due to substantial underreporting, lack of coherent data collection and the fear or inability of victims to acknowledge their situation. Data gather by relevant authorities (the police, social workers, medical institutions etc.) does not match and suffers of methodology and data gathering induced biases. Consequently, we chose not to use any of this data as it can prove misleading in judging the phenomenon at hand.
If we look at statistical research, a number of relevant studies have been conducted in the last 20 years. However, due to their strong focus on couple violence and violence against women, they fail to offer us an idea of the scope of the entire phenomenon. What we can infer from their findings is that at least a third of the population has suffered some type of couple violence.
